Qualification To Start The Course

Expected basic GCSE requirements for advanced level study – i.e. five grades A*–C at GCSE or BTEC science – merit or distinction.

Description Of The Subject

Applied science gives you an understanding of how science is applied in the real world as well as an understanding of the content required for a standard A level. It is equivalent in points to a standard A level.

Applied science has two qualifications:

  1. AS single award = 3 compulsory units
  2. A level single award = 4 compulsory units plus 2 optional units

What You Will Do

For AS Single Award:
Unit 1: Investigating science at work
Unit 2: Energy transfer systems (tested)
Unit 3: Finding out about substances

For A level Single Award:
All 3 AS units plus:
Unit 7: Planning and carrying out a scientific investigation
One tested unit
One further coursework unit
There are 6 units in total. The four units above are compulsory.
