Qualification To Start The Course

Expected basic GCSE requirements for advance level study – i.e. five grades A*–C at GCSE. You must have gained at least a 'C grade' in a humanities subject (i.e. RE, history, geography). The higher the grades in 'written subjects' (such as English) the easier you will find the reading and written work.

Description Of The Subject

The history course focuses on 20th century political, social and cultural changes. The course develops themes studied on outline at Key Stage 4. It endeavours to develop the students' oral and literacy skills through the writing of extended essays and oral presentations and discussions. The course followed is Edexcel Modern World course. In Year 12 we examine – the Russian Revolution, civil rights in the USA, 1945-68, Hitler's Germany. In Year 13 we study Britain and decolonisation, USA and war in Asia and Germany in WWII.

  • Understand evidence, explanation and change
  • Discuss problems and analyse evidence
  • Write clear,well organised explanations and evaluate conflicting interpretations

Future Prospects

  • All of these activities make an A level in history a very useful and much sought after qualification in employment areas such as management, finance, law, civil service, teaching
  • Students who go on to courses or degrees in higher education which might lead to one of these careers will find an A level in history is an excellent preparation.
