Chemistry
AS & A2
Qualification To Start The Course
Expected basic GCSE requirements for Advanced Level study – i.e. five grades A*–C at GCSE. You must have gained at least a 'B – grade' in science double award and mathematics. It is highly desireable that you have studied the higher level GCSE mathematics course and obtained an A or B grade. Applicants will be required to pass an entry test.
Description Of The Subject
The OCR chemistry covers the core chemistry required for the A level student, but puts it in the context of everyday materials and processes. This approach is intended to help stimulate the student's interest and enjoyment of the subject whilst covering the required contents.
What You Will Do
The course consists of six modules to be taken over two years:
Chemistry for life: units on the elements of life and developing fuels
Minerals of medicines: units on minerals to elements, the atmosphere, the polymer revolution and what is in a medicine
Skills for chemistry: an open book examination and an experimental skills paper (both coursework)
Polymers, proteins and steel: designer polymers, engineering polymers, the steel story
Chemistry by design: aspects of agriculture, colour by design, the oceans, medicines by design and visiting the chemistry industry
Individual investigation: coursework
Future Prospects
By studying two or more science A levels you will be opening up access to literally hundreds of different science degree courses at any one of the main UK universities often with A level entry requirements considerably lower than many other degree courses. Chemistry is the central science, combining as it does with biology, physics and mathematics. A science degree not only prepares you for a great diversity of careers within the field of science but also within the world of business and management.
